Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the textbook "Advanced Calculus of Several Variables" by Edwards, specifically regarding the availability of solutions or answer keys for exercises in chapters 2 and 3. Participants express concerns about practicing for an exam without access to answers.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks information about whether the textbook includes a solution manual or answers to exercises.
  • Another participant suggests contacting the author, Henry Edwards, for assistance.
  • A different participant raises a concern about the fairness of using photocopied chapters for class, questioning the ethics of the professor's approach.
  • It is noted that the book likely does not contain solutions or answers at the back, which is common for advanced texts.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the availability of solutions, with some asserting that such resources are typically absent in advanced texts while others express uncertainty about the professor's use of the material.

Contextual Notes

There is an assumption that the participant's professor is using photocopied chapters in a manner that may not align with fair use, but this remains an unresolved ethical concern.

Edwards "Advanced Calculus of Several Variables"

We have been using some chapters from this textbook (1995 edition, ISBN: 978-0070602281) in my Advanced Calculus class, but our professor just gave us photocopies of the chapters we were covering (2 and 3 I think). I wanted to try to do some of the exercises in those chapters to practice for my exam, but I don't have the answers to any of the problems so I can't tell if I am doing them right or not.

Does anyone know if this book has a solution manual or if it has the answers to the exercises at the back of it? Or do you know where I can find solutions to some of the exercises? Thanks.

If you are using "some chapters" rather than just one or two problems, I wonder teacher isn't plagarizing- two whole chapters is hardly "fair use".

That book as with most, more advanced texts, doesn't have any solutions/answers at the back.
