AI Thread Summary
A can complete a task in 4 days, while B takes 6 days, leading to the equation 1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x to find their combined work rate. The discussion also parallels a scenario where A and B eat potato chips, with A finishing in 4 minutes and B in 6 minutes. The hint explains that together they consume 1/4 + 1/6 of the chips per minute, and the goal is to determine how long it takes them to finish the bag. Solving the equation (1/4 + 1/6)x = 1 will yield the time required for both to complete the task together. Understanding these concepts can enhance teamwork efficiency in problem-solving.

A can do a piece of work in 4 days and B in 6 days. How long will they require working together ?

Hint. 1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x

I just don't get them  ( The problem and the hint).
Can you help me understand it ?

one piece of work in four days plus one piece of work in six days equals one piece of work in x days

Question: Suppose A and B are eating potato chips from the same bag. It would take A 4 minutes to eat all the chips if B wasn't there. It would take B 6 minutes to eat all the chips if A wasn't there. How long will it take the two of them to finish that bag of chips?

Hint: In one minute, A eats 1/4 of the chips and B 1/6 of the chips, so 1/4+1/6 of the bag will be eaten each minute. If they keep eating for x minutes, they will have eaten (1/4+1/6)x of the bag. The bag will be empty when this equals 1, so all you have to do is to solve the equation (1/4+1/6)x=1.

Thank you very very very very much.

Fredrik posted a very pedagogical hint :
Suppose A and B are eating potato chips from the same bag.
Doubtlessly students must pay more attention to potato chips than to abstract pieces of work.

I multiplied the values first without the error limit. Got 19.38. rounded it off to 2 significant figures since the given data has 2 significant figures. So = 19. For error I used the above formula. It comes out about 1.48. Now my question is. Should I write the answer as 19±1.5 (rounding 1.48 to 2 significant figures) OR should I write it as 19±1. So in short, should the error have same number of significant figures as the mean value or should it have the same number of decimal places as...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanging mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
