SUMMARY

The magnitude of vector A, defined as A = 4i + 4j, is calculated to be sqrt(32). In the context of a Physics class, the answer should be presented as 5.66 when considering significant figures, as the precision of the result is important for scientific accuracy. The discussion emphasizes the distinction between mathematical and physics conventions regarding significant figures.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vector notation and operations
  • Knowledge of calculating magnitudes of vectors
  • Familiarity with significant figures in scientific calculations
  • Basic principles of physics related to measurement and precision
NEXT STEPS
  • Study vector magnitude calculations in physics
  • Learn about significant figures and their application in scientific contexts
  • Explore the differences between mathematical and physics conventions
  • Review examples of vector addition and its implications in physics problems

Homework Statement

What's the magnitude of A, when A = 4i+4j ?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

The answer is sqrt(32), but do Sig Figs matter for this type of problem? Should I write it as 5.66? Or do I leave it as sqrt(32).

P.S. - I know in a Math class I would write it as sqrt(32), but this is for a Physics class. Thanks all.
