AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on notable scientific partnerships that ended in conflict or estrangement, highlighting several prominent pairs. James Watson and Francis Crick had a contentious relationship, as did Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee, whose fallout is hinted at in biographical accounts. Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr experienced tension due to Heisenberg's political choices during WWII. Edward Teller is mentioned as having strained relationships with many colleagues, while Robert Hooke and Isaac Newton had a famously adversarial dynamic. The conversation also touches on the rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, attributed to Edison's alleged unfulfilled promises and tendency to appropriate others' ideas. Participants express interest in exploring the reasons behind these conflicts, seeking deeper insights into the personal and professional dynamics at play.

Simfishy, since your thread title suggests it, can you enlighten us on "possible reasons why" for those you listed?

Oh, I just wanted people to add in more pairs (along with the reasons why, if they have any, just for some possible insight)

Like, I don't know why Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee broke up (it was said in Chien Shiung Wu's bio that they attended her retirement party - and went to the opposite sides of the room, still not forgiving each other for something).

Edison and Tesla

---(Edison supposedly didn't fulfill his promises to Tesla---Edison was a profiteer, like Carnegie, Rockefeller, Morgan, etc. of his day---Edison also liked stealing other people's ideas and patenting them for himself--that's one reason he had so many)

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...

Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
