I think this has been mentioned before, but is worth mentioning again: sharelatex.org. Recently they have joined Overleaf. For personal editing with no collaborators, it's free. You don't have to install any package, so it is an advantage. It's quite good if you want to learn LaTeX without taking the hassle of installing an IDE and compiler.

Agree. The one downer to Overleaf/ShareLaTeX is that they inexplicably (still) don't have the Save As... functionality. This is why I still work with a local install. It's very nice that they have Vim keybindings along with automatic windowing (code on left, document on right).

I used Tex Studio to write my thesis. Did not encounter any issues with the software itself. Has some auto-filling options which some people might fight useful. I can also run commands and not bother with the shell window, which for me was a bonus.
