Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the meaning of GAS numbers stamped on armatures, specifically in the context of vintage motorcycle generators. Participants seek to identify the significance of these numbers and their relation to the armatures in question.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the meaning of GAS numbers, specifically "GAS 3237," on approximately 200 armatures.
  • Another participant asks for clarification on whether the armatures are from AC or DC motors and requests information about the manufacturer to provide a more accurate answer.
  • A participant suggests that the armatures are likely from vintage motorcycle generators and expresses a desire to identify them despite not knowing the manufacturer.
  • Links to external resources are shared, which may provide additional information about the GAS numbers but do not definitively answer the original question.
  • One participant mentions an active auction on eBay for a GAS-3237 DC generator armature, indicating that such items are available for purchase.
  • Another participant expresses surprise at the eBay listing, suggesting it could be either unusual or potentially valuable.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the armatures are likely from vintage motorcycle generators, but there is no consensus on the exact meaning of the GAS numbers or how to identify them definitively.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not established a clear definition of "armature," which could affect the interpretation of the GAS numbers. The discussion relies on assumptions about the origin and type of the armatures.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in vintage motorcycle parts, collectors, or those researching electrical components related to motor generators may find this discussion relevant.

I was wondering and this might be a stupid question... I have approx. 200+ armatures with a GAS number stamped on them Like "GAS 3237". There are probably 20 different numbers or so. Where can I find a list of what these numbers are or mean?

"Armature" can have several different meanings.
Are you referring to motor armatures? If yes, AC or DC?
Who is the manufacturer?

The more information you provide, the greater the chance for a good answer.

I believe the armatures to be from vintage motorcycle generators, as I bought a motorcycle parts hoard and these were in there.
So they should be dc, manufacturer I haven't a clue, but a lot of them have this GAS number, and I'd like to be able to identify them if at all possible.

Google finds this, which seems to get closer:

Not sure it answers your question though...

@berkeman nailed it.
eBay has an active auction for an Indian Scout/Chief GAS-3237 DC generator armature.

I saw that there was one on Ebay. Weird?
