AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the value of joining the Golden Key International Honour Society, particularly in the context of a lack of other honors societies at the school. Key points include the potential benefits of networking and meeting new people, as well as the possibility of gaining an advantage in job searches. Participants suggest researching local chapters and events to assess the organization's value before committing to the membership fee of $80 to $90. The consensus leans toward the idea that joining could be beneficial, especially for those planning to pursue graduate studies in mathematics.

Are they worth it? At my school there is no national Mathematics or Applied Mathematics honors societies. But I got invited to Golden Key. I'm wondering if it is worth it to join Golden Key? Maybe not even for recognition but maybe just to meet more people?

Any feedback is appreciated.

For me, the only thing I thought Golden Key might have been good for was getting jobs, at least, that's what they say. If possible, I would go and try to talk to current members of Golden Key and see if it has done anything for them. If you get the sense that it really does give you a good leg up in getting a job, then it may be worth the $80/$90 dollars they ask from you.

i plan on going to grad school immediately after undergrad for my ph.d in mathematics. i guess it would be worth it just to meet new people

Couldn't hurt, I guess. Go to their website, look up your local chapter, and see what kind of events they have, and how often they have them. If it looks like it's worth the money, then do it.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
