AI Thread Summary
Farmers in eastern Australia are facing significant challenges due to large swarms of locusts, which have emerged at a critical time as they were beginning to recover from devastating bushfires and a severe drought. The recent rainfall, which has fostered new plant growth, has inadvertently created ideal conditions for locust breeding, exacerbating the situation for farmers. The discussion also touches on the need for clarity in the thread title to accurately reflect the focus on the locust problem in Australia.

In the eye of the swarm

All over eastern Australia farmers are struggling to cope with great swarms of locusts. But where do these plagues come from?

The insect swarms could not have come at a worse time for the farmers, who were only just recovering from bushfires and the worst drought to hit the country in 100 years.

Unfortunately, it is precisely the conditions that were helping them to recover - a little rain, the growth of new shoots - that have also created the locust problem. [continued]

I think this thread has a slightly misleading title.

Yes it is. Monique will have to change the title as it appears in the forum. I can only change the title on my own post once you posted.

What do you want it so say?

I am reading Nicholas Wade's book A Troublesome Inheritance. Please let's not make this thread a critique about the merits or demerits of the book. This thread is my attempt to understanding the evidence that Natural Selection in the human genome was recent and regional. On Page 103 of A Troublesome Inheritance, Wade writes the following: "The regional nature of selection was first made evident in a genomewide scan undertaken by Jonathan Pritchard, a population geneticist at the...
