In summary, the speaker is seeking help in finding a specific paper on General Relativity for a project. They are not confident in their ability to find it online or in libraries. The paper is by R. H. Gowdy and can potentially be found on the author's website or on the arXiv, but the speaker is having trouble locating it. They are seeking advice on how to access it.

Ok, hopefully this is the right place to post about this. I'm writing a project on General Relativity and need access to a specific paper. I'm not very good at finding stuff online or in libraries. The paper is:

Gowdy, R. H.: "Vacuum Spacetimes with Two-parameter Spacelike Isometry Groups and Compact Invariant Hypersurfaces: Topologies and Boundary Conditions," Annals of Physics (N.Y.) 83, pp 203-241, 1974.

I'm on the authors website:

http://www.people.vcu.edu/~rgowdy/gowdy.htm

and as you can see, he claims that it's available here:

http://xxx.lanl.gov/archive/gr-qc

The only problem is, I can't for the life of me find it on that website. Secondly, once I find it, how the hell do I access it, most of them are blocked (even when I'm on my university network). This is the first time I've had to do any proper research for a project which is why I'm so bad at finding this sort of stuff.

Help please!

Then, go to the library and talk to a librarian about finding stuff on-line and in libraries. This is important; do it!

I suspect that this paper is not on and the arXiv, and, on his website, the author does not state that it is. Read carefully! Go to the library!

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out for help with finding Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper. As a fellow scientist, I completely understand the struggle of finding specific research papers. I will do my best to assist you in this matter.

First, I suggest using a search engine specific to academic articles, such as Google Scholar or SciHub. These search engines often have a larger database of research papers and may be able to locate the paper you are looking for.

Secondly, if you are unable to access the paper through the author's website or through a search engine, I recommend reaching out to your university's library. They may have access to the paper through their database or may be able to obtain a copy for you through interlibrary loan.

If none of these options work, you can also try reaching out to the author directly. Many researchers are happy to share their work with others who are interested in their research.

I hope this helps and good luck with your project! Don't hesitate to reach out again if you need further assistance.

1. What is Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper about?

Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper is a mathematical study of a type of spacetime known as a vacuum spacetime, which is a region of space that contains no matter or energy. The paper explores the properties and behavior of these spacetimes, including their geometry and potential applications in physics and cosmology.

2. Why is it important to find Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper?

Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper is considered a seminal work in the field of mathematical relativity and has been cited by numerous other researchers. It provides valuable insights and mathematical techniques for understanding and studying vacuum spacetimes, which have relevance to our understanding of the universe and its evolution.

3. How can I access Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper?

Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper was published in 1974 in the journal Physical Review D. It is available online through various academic databases and can also be accessed through university libraries or by purchasing a copy of the journal issue in which it was published.

4. What are some potential applications of Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper?

The study of vacuum spacetimes has potential applications in various areas of physics and cosmology, such as understanding the early universe, black holes, and gravitational waves. The mathematical techniques outlined in the paper can also be applied to other areas of research in mathematical relativity and differential geometry.

5. Are there any updates or revisions to Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper?

As with any scientific paper, there may be updates or revisions to Gowdy's "Vacuum Spacetimes" paper as new research and advancements are made in the field. It is always important to check for newer versions of the paper or any related publications that may provide additional insights or developments.
