AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on identifying specific trees visible in an image pinned at Missoula, Montana, from Panoramio via Google Earth. Participants speculate on the types of trees, noting that the tall tree appears to be a pine, possibly a young white pine (Pinus strobus), while the smaller trees remain unidentified. There is mention of sweet gum trees, but it's acknowledged that they are typically found in eastern states. The need for on-site leaf samples for accurate identification is emphasized, alongside observations about the area's beautiful topography and the presence of rectangular hay bales in the field.

The first tree is the same as the first two, but it's diseased.

the tall one is some kind of pine tree (and yes it looks anemic), but the short ones i have no idea.

unfortunately, i still can't read the tree leaves, even at zoom. gum trees have characteristic star-shaped leaves. maybe there's an arborist around here.

For the pine, pines tend to change shape quite a bit and anything goes but I know some young white pines, Pinus strobus, which look a bit alike. Just a guess though.

I probably have seen them, passing through Missoula a few moons ago. Beautiful topography !
Looks like there were rectangular hay bales in that field.
For identification purposes, we need to send someone on the ground to take leaf samples.
