How Can We See Light from Black Holes?

AI Thread Summary
Black holes are surrounded by a ring of light, known as the accretion disc, which is formed by matter that emits light as it approaches the black hole. This light does not come from inside the black hole, as nothing can escape its gravitational pull. Instead, light from objects behind the black hole can be bent due to gravitational lensing, making it appear as if it originates from the black hole's vicinity. The intense gravity of the black hole bends light that skims its event horizon, allowing us to observe these rings. Understanding this phenomenon provides evidence for the existence of black holes in the universe.

Whenever I see any image of a black hole or in television or anywhere, I found there is a ring of light around the black hole. In discovery channel, I heard them saying that scientist found rings of light in space which had black region inside it. It was also one of the evidence with the help of which we can say that black holes are there in the universe.

My question is that, when we know that black hole has sooo... much of gravity that even light cannot escape from it, how can we see those rings of light ? Means how that light is able to reach our eyes ?

Hi Durgesh! Welcome to PF!

The light comes from round the black hole, not from inside it …

matter about to fall into the black hole can emit light,

and also light from objects behind the black hole can get focussed to appear to come from the https://www.physicsforums.com/library.php?do=view_item&itemid=268" at r = 3M

While any light that is makes it beyond the event horizon will not escape, light that "skims" the surface so to speak is simply bent from its path. The closer the light is to the event horizon the more it is bent. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_lens

Now that they have shared their findings with the larger community someone else might find an explanation - or maybe it was actually made by life.
TL;DR Summary: In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. In case of failure to detect alien signals, it will further expand the radius of the so-called silence (or rather, radio silence) of the Universe. Is there any sense in this or is blissful ignorance better? In 3 years, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope (or rather, a system of telescopes) should be put into operation. This thread is dedicated to the beauty and awesomeness of our Universe. If you feel like it, please share video clips and photos (or nice animations) of space and objects in space in this thread. Your posts, clips and photos may by all means include scientific information; that does not make it less beautiful to me (n.b. the posts must of course comply with the PF guidelines, i.e. regarding science, only mainstream science is allowed, fringe/pseudoscience is not allowed). n.b.
