AI Thread Summary
A patent application for a new legal database technology was approved on August 12, under patent number 7412463. This innovation allows users to view the legal code as it would have appeared on any specific date, addressing the challenge posed by the infrequency of law book publications compared to the daily changes in laws. The discussion highlights the importance of this tool for legal professionals who need to reference laws as they existed at particular times, especially in cases of legal violations. The community expresses congratulations and enthusiasm for the hard work that led to the patent approval, while also humorously noting the potential irony of the database uncovering information that could challenge the patent itself.

Our patent application was approved back on Aug 12. I didn't find out until today.

It's patent number 7412463. Laws change on a daily basis, but law books are only published periodically, typically annually. If you are charged with a violation because of actions that occurred on a particular date, your lawyer would be interested to know what the law was on that date along with knowing what other relevant laws were. We invented a way to database the laws so that that you can view the entire legal code as it would have appeared had it been published on that day.

Wouldn't it be ironic if your patent were invalidated by a search your own database turned up?
