AI Thread Summary
Grades play a significant role in PhD applications, particularly in major courses. High entrance test scores, such as the GRE, can compensate for lower grades, while strong grades can help mitigate low test scores. However, letters of recommendation from professors are deemed even more crucial, as they not only influence admission decisions but are also vital for securing financial assistance.

What is more important than either of those are letters of recommendation by professors.

They're also important if you're interested in financial help.

I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
