The geophysicists I've spoken to claim that the field is very lucrative. A PhD in geophysics will often work in the energy sector searching for oil.
 


All the geophysicists I knew didn't have any problems getting jobs. In fact, I believe some of them were specifically recruited (ie., they actually had people knocking on their door towards the end of their (graduate) degrees). Of course this was ~ 8 years ago.
