Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the suggestion of creating a FAQ for the subforum, addressing common questions related to admissions, academic challenges, and career prospects in physics, mathematics, and engineering. The scope includes conceptual and community engagement aspects rather than technical or theoretical content.

Discussion Character

  • Meta-discussion
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests creating a FAQ to address recurring questions about university admissions and academic concerns, proposing specific topics to include.
  • Another participant encourages taking initiative to create the FAQ, suggesting that the original poster should compile the information themselves.
  • A later reply humorously comments on the tone of the proposed FAQ, indicating a preference for professionals to handle the writing.
  • One participant makes a light-hearted analogy about volunteering forum members for unrelated tasks, questioning the suitability of theoretical versus experimental contributors for practical work.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

this might not be the right place for forum suggestions but this is certainly the forum where these suggestions should be implemented...

can we a get a faq (and concomitant deletions) for these topics:

can i get into harvard/stanford/cambridge/oxford/mit?

am i too dumb for physics/math/engineering?

is this course load to difficult (or its deceptive cousin 'is this course load to easy')?

will i be rich if i pursue ____(esoteric subfield of physics/math/engineering)?

i got an A- can i still get into harvard/mit/stanford/heaven?

which is the best university for ____ ?

i volunteer vanadium50 and twofish to write up most of the answers

If you have the idea, you should do it yourself. Take the initiative. You can quote previous posts by ZapperZ, Van50, twofish and others.

oh the tone of any such post that i write would be way to sarcastic and facetious. best to let the professionals do it.

I'd like to have my kitchen remodeled. Can I volunteer a few PFers to do the work for me? Experimentalists, preferably, since I'm not sure that the theoreticians really have what it takes for this sort of hands-on work.

If it works out for you, I am next in line! And I agree on the experimentalists side.
