Index of refraction and density

AI Thread Summary
It is possible for a medium with lower density to have a higher index of refraction. While there is generally a correlation where increased density leads to a higher refractive index, this is not a strict rule. For example, certain oils, such as olive oil, exhibit a higher refractive index than water despite having lower density. This phenomenon highlights the complexity of the relationship between density and refractive index. Further information can be found in the provided Wikipedia link.

Hi,

Is it possible that the medium of lesser density has larger index of refraction? If yes, please give me some examples.

Thanks in advance.

Actually as density inceases refractive index also increases, although there is no specific relation between the two. But many oils like olive oil, have relatively more refractive index but having low density when copared to water... This is one wikipedia link, you might find what you need...
