Schools Insider Insights: Math Grad School Admissions & Interview Process

AI Thread Summary
Graduate school admissions for math programs may involve interviews, although this varies by institution and is not universally stated on official websites. Interviews typically focus on discussing research interests and aligning them with faculty members' expertise. For applicants to physics graduate schools, it is beneficial to identify professors whose research aligns with their skills, as this can enhance the chances of acceptance. Additionally, passing the GRE and completing the formal application process are essential steps in the admissions journey.

Do grad school admissions for math typically involve interviews?

I can't find this on the official websites, but it seems like some do from a few friends I talked to.

If so, what are they like? Does it mainly involve talking about what sort of research you are interested in doing?

Unsure about math, but if you apply to a Physics grad school, seek a prof whose research interest are aligned with your skills. If a professor would express an interest in you, all you need to do is pass the GREs and go through the formal application process.
All the best!

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
