SUMMARY

High school students interested in both medicine and engineering face a significant challenge in achieving deep knowledge in engineering independently. The consensus is that self-study through textbooks cannot equate to the comprehensive education and practical experience gained from a formal engineering degree program. For those aiming for job opportunities in engineering, a degree is essential to compete effectively in the job market. A viable path suggested is to pursue an engineering major while fulfilling pre-med requirements, allowing for a dual focus on both fields.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of engineering disciplines, specifically electrical and aerospace engineering.
  • Knowledge of medical school prerequisites and application processes.
  • Familiarity with self-study techniques and resources for complex subjects.
  • Awareness of the importance of practical experience in engineering education.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research accredited engineering programs that offer dual degrees or pre-med tracks.
  • Explore textbooks and resources specific to electrical and aerospace engineering, such as "Fundamentals of Aerodynamics" by John D. Anderson.
  • Investigate internship opportunities in engineering to gain practical experience.
  • Learn about the medical school application process and requirements for undergraduate students.
USEFUL FOR

High school students considering a career in medicine or engineering, academic advisors, and individuals exploring interdisciplinary studies between engineering and healthcare.

Hi guys,
I am a high school student and I think I will study in medicine. However, I am VERY interested in electrical and aerospace engineering. Is it possible that on my own , I deeply study those subjects in order to have a deep understanding. What I mean is that I want to be as knowledgeable as the real aerospace/electrical engineers. Is my goal feasible or no? Can you guys recommend me some good textbooks please.

thank you

No, it is not possible that by reading a few books you will be as knowledgeable as those who spent four years of thei live studying this at university.

To add, these students who study engineering get laboratory experience with expensive equipment, out of book information from experts of the field, etc.

If your goal is to have job opportunities in these fields, you're not going to be able to really "prove" you can compete with those who have a degree in it.

To study medicine, in the US at least, you could study one of the engineering majors while knocking out the premed requirements as an undergrad, then apply to medical school.
