AI Thread Summary
Reflections on Relativity offers a philosophical and mathematical approach to understanding special relativity, making it suitable for students with a calculus background but limited advanced math knowledge. The book is recommended for those seeking an honest mathematical treatment of relativity, as it effectively combines philosophical insights with quantitative analysis. This dual approach is considered essential for a comprehensive understanding of the theory, allowing readers to explore the concepts and implications of relativity in depth. The availability of the book online enhances accessibility, encouraging further exploration of this complex subject. Engaging with both philosophical and mathematical perspectives is advised for a richer understanding of relativity.

I've just started to read Reflections on Relativity, but it seems to take a philosophical and mathematical stand on this subject. I wonder if this is a good approach to understand special relativity in some depth.

The book is available online on

I read a few chapters on things I know about, and they are sound, and adapted to the needs of a student who has calculus but not much advanced math beyond that. I would recommend it to people who want an honest mathematical treatment of relativity at that level.

It is certainly a valid approach to understand special relativity through both philosophical and mathematical perspectives. In fact, many experts in the field argue that a comprehensive understanding of relativity requires both approaches. The philosophical aspect allows for a deeper exploration of the concepts and implications of relativity, while the mathematical aspect provides a precise and quantitative understanding of the theory. By combining these two approaches, one can gain a more comprehensive understanding of relativity.

Furthermore, reading Reflections on Relativity can be a valuable learning experience as it offers a unique perspective and insight into the theory. It is always beneficial to explore different perspectives and approaches when trying to understand a complex subject like relativity. Additionally, the fact that the book is available online is a great opportunity to access it and deepen your understanding of relativity at your own pace.

Overall, I believe that approaching the subject of relativity from both philosophical and mathematical angles is a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the theory. I encourage you to continue reading Reflections on Relativity and to explore other resources as well to further enhance your understanding of this fascinating topic.

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
