AI Thread Summary
Scientists have extracted tiny protein fragments from a 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex bone, providing genetic evidence that T. rex is related to modern chickens. This discovery builds on previous findings of T. rex soft tissue and opens new avenues for research in paleontology. The significance of this finding has been highlighted in various media, including NPR's "Science Friday," where researchers discussed its implications. The excitement surrounding these discoveries indicates a growing interest in the evolutionary connections between ancient dinosaurs and contemporary birds.

I think this is a huge discovery! I was hoping others would post comments because I don't know enough about paleontology myself. I recall reading about the finding of T.Rex soft tissue a couple of years back and wondering what discoveries it would lead to. More on the way I hope.

Thanks for posting the link!

The study provides critical new insights into the African Humid Period, a time between 14,500 and 5,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a green savanna, rich in water bodies that facilitated human habitation and the spread of pastoralism. Later aridification turned this region into the world's largest desert. Due to the extreme aridity of the region today, DNA preservation is poor, making this pioneering ancient DNA study all the more significant. Genomic analyses reveal that the...
