SUMMARY

The iPhone mute button functions as a slide switch and is designed to be water-resistant, not completely waterproof. Various iPhone models exhibit different levels of water resistance, with models up to iPhone 6 being water-resistant and the iPhone 7 and later models classified as waterproof. Understanding the mechanism of the mute switch requires knowledge of the IP Code, which defines the water and dust resistance ratings of electronic devices. The discussion highlights the importance of distinguishing between water-resistant and waterproof features in smartphones.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of IP Code ratings for electronic devices
  • Familiarity with iPhone models and their specifications
  • Basic knowledge of slide switch mechanisms
  • Research skills for finding technical articles on waterproofing
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the IP Code and its implications for smartphone design
  • Explore the differences in water resistance between iPhone models
  • Learn about the internal mechanisms of slide switches
  • Investigate articles on waterproofing techniques in consumer electronics
USEFUL FOR

Smartphone engineers, product designers, and consumers interested in the durability and functionality of mobile devices, particularly regarding water resistance features.

Hey, guys! I'm wondering, Iphone mute button, it's a slide switch and it's waterproof, can you explain me mechanism of it? Maybe with a drawing?

@berkeman I found that there are few good articles explaining about waterproofing in phones. I tried to analyse button mechanism from the photos, which we can easily find in google. But I still don't get it, trying to figure out... any ideas?

I only did a quick Google search and clicked into a couple of the hits. They point out that some iPhone models are "water resistant" (not waterproof), and I didn't know enough about the various models to know if the mute switch you mention is one one of the water resistant models or not.

Which iPhone?

Although it seems simple, "waterproof" is actually subject with a lot of nuance.

Till the model 6 it's water resistant after that, for example model 7, it's waterproof. It would really interesting to see that's inside of it.
