Is the Potential Energy of Earth Infinite or Zero?

AI Thread Summary
The potential energy of Earth is not absolute but relative to a specific reference point, which complicates the notion of it being infinite or zero. Potential energy can vary based on the height of an object in relation to a chosen reference point, leading to different values. The discussion also touches on the concept of earthing in electrical connections, suggesting that Earth can absorb charges, which implies a form of infinite potential in that context. Additionally, it is noted that potential energy exists in various forms, including electric and gravitational. Understanding these nuances is essential for a comprehensive grasp of potential energy concepts.

the potential energy of Earth is infinity or zero?

You question does not supply enough information for an answer. "Potential energy" is, by definition, always relative to some point. That is, for example, an object with mass m has potential energy mgh relative to a point h meters below it, potential energy -mgh relative to a point h meters above it, and, or course, potential energy 0 relative to its own height.

thqs fr ur reply sir bt i still have doubt that we do earthing fr electrical connections sir dat means we can say dat Earth has infinite potential to receive the charges

You'll need to stop talking in text speak to get answers here. However, there is more than one form of potential energy...electric and gravitational are two examples.

I have recently been really interested in the derivation of Hamiltons Principle. On my research I found that with the term ##m \cdot \frac{d}{dt} (\frac{dr}{dt} \cdot \delta r) = 0## (1) one may derivate ##\delta \int (T - V) dt = 0## (2). The derivation itself I understood quiet good, but what I don't understand is where the equation (1) came from, because in my research it was just given and not derived from anywhere. Does anybody know where (1) comes from or why from it the...
