Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the naming of the exoplanet tau Ceti 'f', exploring whether an official name has been assigned and the factors influencing this process, such as uncertainties in mass and inclination. The conversation includes speculative suggestions for potential names.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the official naming status of tau Ceti 'f' and suggests that uncertainties over its mass and inclination may be contributing factors.
  • Another participant comments on the relatively small percentage of exoplanets that have been named, implying that the number is still significant.
  • A different participant proposes that a likely name for tau Ceti 'f' could start with 'f', inviting further suggestions.
  • One suggestion for a name is "Fairchilde," referencing Lord Byron and its connections to science and engineering.
  • Another participant counters with "Thunderchild," arguing it may be more fitting given the planet's expected atmospheric phenomena.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the significance of the number of named exoplanets and propose various names for tau Ceti 'f', indicating a lack of consensus on both the naming process and the appropriate name.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes uncertainties regarding the mass and inclination of tau Ceti 'f', which may affect its naming status. The proposed names reflect personal interpretations and preferences rather than any formal naming conventions.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in exoplanet research, naming conventions in astronomy, and speculative discussions about planetary characteristics may find this thread relevant.

TL;DR
A bunch of exo-planets have been named: Is there an official name yet for tau Ceti 'f' ??

I've looked in the usual places, doesn't seem to have shown up.

Would this be due to uncertainties over mass, which is still 'Sine(i)' with wide error bars due uncertain inclination ??

Less than 3%.

Fair point, though I'd suggest that ~3% of ~4000 (plus as many unconfirmed) is still a 'bunch' rather than, um, a 'bazillion'...

FWIW, what would a likely name be ? Preferably something beginning with 'f'...

"Fairchilde" Neat ! However, given probable naked-eye auroras and massive lightning storms, 'Thunderchild' would seem a better fit...

I spy with my little eye interferometer-linked, multi-mega-mirrored, terrestrial planet finding orbital telescope (Mark II), something beginning with 'f'...
