AI Thread Summary
To construct a vehicle that travels at least 5 meters using stored potential energy without chemicals, a spring mechanism is recommended for energy storage. A design utilizing a Folgers coffee can with a rod can effectively harness this energy. To enhance performance, using smooth tires will minimize friction, and the vehicle's shape should be optimized to reduce air resistance. Ensuring a proper release mechanism for the spring will maximize the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy. This approach will help achieve the distance requirement for the physics project.

Ke/pe Vehicle Help!

we have to construct a vehicle for physics class that can travel the greatest distance possible. the energy must be stored "in" the vehicle as potential energy, and must have a 'rolling' aspect. we cannot use any chemical reactions or slingshot methods. it must travel atleast 5 meters.

i have absolutely no idea what to do. some people have told me something about using a folgers coffee can and putting a rod through it, but I'm still so confused. any ideas and how to construct it would save my life. and my grade!

A spring would be ideal. It would store potential energy, and once released it could release all of its energy into kinetic energy. In order to reduce friction use tires with no grooves. Make the car ain such a way that air resistance can be minimized.

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
