Length of Base to support weighted pillar

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on determining the necessary base length to support a pillar with a weight of 2.1 kg on one side. Participants emphasize the need for additional information to provide a definitive answer, including the height of the pillar, the material properties, and the angle of the weight application. Without these parameters, calculating the required base length remains inconclusive.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles, particularly torque and stability.
  • Knowledge of material properties relevant to structural support.
  • Familiarity with weight distribution concepts.
  • Basic geometry for calculating dimensions and angles.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of torque and how it affects stability in structures.
  • Learn about material properties that influence structural integrity.
  • Investigate weight distribution techniques in engineering.
  • Explore geometric calculations for determining base dimensions in support structures.
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, architects, students in physics or engineering disciplines, and anyone involved in structural design and stability analysis.

Hi all,

I need to find base length x which would support the pillar and wouldn't topple over (weight of 2.1kg on right hand side of pillar)
Thanks in advance

Hi Dr. Courtney,

Thanks for your reply.

What further information do I need to supply / obtain?

Many thanks
