AI Thread Summary
The NE555 timer can be used as a substitute for the LM555 timer in PWM circuits, as they are essentially the same in functionality. However, variations in voltage requirements exist among different CMOS versions, which may necessitate circuit modifications. The NE555 is widely available in Australia through retailers like Jaycar and Altronics. Users should verify compatibility based on specific circuit requirements. Overall, the NE555 is a suitable alternative for projects originally designed for the LM555.

Homework Statement

Hi, I am trying to make a PWM circuit that calls for a LM555 timer but I only have easy access to NE555 timers (In Australia) and am wondering if it will suffice??

Thanks for any help, circuit found here: http://www.rmcybernetics.com/projects/DIY_Devices/homemade_signal_generator2.htm

The prefix is partly determined by the name of the manufacturer.

See the list on this site:

Many manufacturers make a version of the 555.

There are various CMOS versions which use different voltages to the LM555 and NE555 so you would have to modify the circuit to use them.

For your query, though, the LM555 and the NE555 are essentially the same.

I see Jaycar and Altronics both carry the NE555. (I'm in Perth).
