AI Thread Summary
When filling out the "Tell us about yourself" form for university admission, particularly for the University of Waterloo's mathematical physics program, it's essential to focus on presenting a well-rounded image. Admissions committees seek evidence of personal interests, leadership skills, community service, and extracurricular involvement. While the original poster feels they lack traditional activities like sports or community service, it's crucial to highlight any unique interests or experiences that reflect personal growth and motivation.Engagement in activities should be genuine rather than a last-minute attempt to enhance the application, as insincerity can be easily detected. Instead, crafting a narrative that showcases personal interests, academic pursuits, and aspirations can be effective. Sharing stories or experiences that illustrate passion for physics or related hobbies may resonate well with the admissions committee. Ultimately, the goal is to convey authenticity and a deeper understanding of oneself beyond academic achievements.

Need help in filling out "Tell us about yourself" form

Most of you probably done this before; I need to write a little thing to "tell us about yourself" for university admission.

I'm doing one for the University of Waterloo right now: http://www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/thenextstep/applicants/aif.php" I'm applying for Physics. (Specificly their mathematical physics program)

I don't know what should I put. I don't play any sports and I'm not involved with my school in any way- with things like students council and stuff and I haven't done anything with my community.

What kind of things are they looking for? and are there things I shouldn't put?

I need to fill out my AIF too, not this soon though.. Why are you doing this so early? I think you still have time to get more involved in those things so that your AIF will look more impressive.

To be honest, some of what they're looking for are what you stated that you lack. They want evidence of well-roundedness, demonstrated interest in your field, service to your community, leadership skills, teamwork ability, awards, honors, accomplishments, fun hobbies, even academic extracurriculars such as a physics club or competition. They want to know that you're more than just a physics-studying robot. You're more than just words on paper. You're human, and you know yourself better than anyone else. The admissions committee wants to learn about you in your own words, whatever you wish to tell them.

I disagree with the previous poster's suggestion of getting more involved now to attempt to make your AIF look more impressive. In my opinion, it'll look shallow and transparent. If you join a group because you really want to get involved, that's great, and no better time than now! But if you join simply to try to build up your resume, your true intentions will be obvious when you write that you've only been a member for a few weeks, haven't done anything yet, and don't have any real interest in the group. Getting involved is beneficial only if you're sincere.

Frankly, you know what they want. If you want to get in put down what they want to hear if you think it greatly increases your chances. My opinion, take it as you will.

Make a story centered around your interests, this way you can introduce what interests you with the University in a creative and effective way. I had a friend who pretty much wrote about what he carried in his backpack during High school and got into a University in the States.

Damnit I did not mention any of the sports or clubs I've been involved in when I submited my form. Just mentioned work experience and motivation, might be different forms but the general idea was the same.

I'm going to make this one quick since I have little time. Background: Throughout my life I have always done good in Math. I almost always received 90%+, and received easily upwards of 95% when I took normal-level HS Math courses. When I took Grade 9 "De-Streamed" Math (All students must take "De-Streamed" in Canada), I initially had 98% until I got very sick and my mark had dropped to 95%. The Physics teachers and Math teachers talked about me as if I were some sort of genius. Then, an...
Bit Britain-specific but I was wondering, what's the best path to take for A-Levels out of the following (I know Y10 seems a bit early to be thinking about A-levels, but my choice will impact what I do this year/ in y11) I (almost) definitely want to do physics at University - so keep that in mind... The subjects that I'm almost definitely going to take are Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and I'm taking a fast track programme which means that I'll be taking AS computer science at the end...
After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
