AI Thread Summary
Excluding News Reporter and Usenet posts from 'New Posts' searches is not functioning as intended, with users reporting that their preferences are not saved. Despite checking the exclusion boxes and saving changes, they remain unchecked upon revisiting the profile settings. The issue appears to stem from the custom hacks developed independently of the platform's standard functions. There is an indication that these features will be ported to a new system, which may resolve the problem. Users are hopeful for a more responsive solution in the future.

Whenever I choose to exclude News Reporter posts and Usenet posts from my 'New Posts' searches, it never works, and those posts still show up. In fact, every time I go back to edit my profile, those boxes to exclude those posts are unchecked (even if I checked them 5 minutes ago and clicked on "Save changes").

The news reporter and usenet posts are hacks that we've developed independent of vb's normal functions.

Okay, but when I edit my options so that those posts are excluded from my 'New Posts' searches, why do they keep appearing, and why don't the boxes stay checked?

Hmmm not sure, but we will be porting those features over to the new system so hopefully they will be responsive then.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
