Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around recommendations for books on nonlinear physics, exploring recent progress in the field and its related areas. Participants express interest in various subfields of nonlinear physics, including fluid mechanics, elasticity, electric circuits, optics, and mechanical systems.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants recommend "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" by Strogatz as a standard text in the field.
  • There is a discussion about the various areas within nonlinear physics, such as nonlinear fluid mechanics, elasticity, electric circuits, optics, and mechanical systems.
  • Additional book recommendations include "Applied Maths: Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations" by Jordan and Smith, "Mathematical Methods for Engineers and Scientists" by Kahn, "Chaos in Dynamical Systems" by Ott, and "Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics" by Hilborn, among others.
  • One participant mentions the first edition of "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" by Thompson & Stewart as a valuable resource, highlighting its diagrams and standard use in their department.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of certain texts, but there is no consensus on a definitive list of recommended readings or on the specific aspects of nonlinear physics that are most relevant or interesting.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve which specific areas of nonlinear physics are most significant or how recent progress is defined, leaving these aspects open to interpretation.

Hi, all
Would you guys recommend some books on the subject of nonlinear physics?
And how is the recent progress about it and its related fields?
Thanks!

Strogatz, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos is a standard.

What specifically do you want to know?

What specifically do you want to know?

yeah, most areas of physics have linear and nonlinear theory

Non linear fluid mechanics?
Non linear elasticity?
Non linear electric circuits?
Non linear electric component theory?
Non linear optics
Non linear mechanical systems?

und so weiter

As an engineer I found (the first edition of) the following book quite good with many nice diagrams. It was more or less standard reading at the department I graduated from:

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, Thompson & Steward, Wiley 2002 (http://books.google.dk/books?id=vQvu-5VPkmcC)
