Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the availability of online Bachelor of Science (BS) programs in Aeronautical Engineering. Participants explore the challenges and limitations of offering such degrees online compared to Master of Science (MS) programs, which are more commonly available in an online format.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about schools offering a BS in Aeronautical Engineering, noting the prevalence of online MS programs.
  • Another participant asserts that no online BS programs exist, suggesting that the nature of engineering education, which typically includes labs and peer interaction, does not lend itself well to online formats.
  • A participant acknowledges the availability of MS programs and expresses confusion about the lack of BS options.
  • One contributor speculates that the emphasis on fundamental knowledge in a BS program is a key reason for the absence of online offerings, implying that those pursuing an MS have already covered these fundamentals.
  • Another participant elaborates that some MS degrees may require only coursework without labs or discussions, which could explain their online availability, contrasting this with the perceived shortcomings of an online BS in engineering.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the absence of online BS programs in Aeronautical Engineering, but there is disagreement regarding the reasons for this absence and the implications for engineering education.

Contextual Notes

Participants express concerns about the lack of hands-on experience and peer interaction in online engineering programs, which may limit the effectiveness of such education.

Does anyone know of a school that offers a BS in Aeronautical Engineering? So far all I can find are MS offered online. I may go for a MS eventually, but for now I am just looking for a BS.

Thanks!

None exist that I know of, and for good reason. A full engineering degree doesn't lend itself well to being taught online. You won't get labs or exposure to your peers with whom most engineers do a lot of work.

I can find plenty of places that offer a MS, so I thought I could find one that offers a BS degree.

I think the reason is the importance of the fundamentals.

If you are going for a MS, then you have already addressed them.

Some varieties of MS degrees require only coursework and generally are only like 8 courses or something like that. These graduate-level courses don't have lab or discussion components, so there isn't a whole lot you are losing online, so programs offer it. It would be shady to offer an online BS in engineering of any sort because of all the labs and discussion sections you would miss.
