Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on deriving the Nodal and Principal points distance equations for thick lenses. Participants suggest using the matrix method or general equations specific to thick lenses as effective approaches. A key resource provided is the Thick Lens Formula available at Wolfram ScienceWorld. The conversation emphasizes the importance of starting with known equations and concepts related to thick lenses to facilitate the derivation process.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of thick lens optics
  • Familiarity with matrix methods in optics
  • Knowledge of principal and nodal points
  • Ability to interpret equations related to lens formulas
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the Thick Lens Formula from Wolfram ScienceWorld
  • Learn about the matrix method for optical systems
  • Explore derivations of principal and nodal points in thick lenses
  • Review general equations for thick lenses in optics textbooks
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in optics, optical engineers, and anyone involved in the study or application of thick lens systems will benefit from this discussion.

Homework Statement

I have to derive the Nodal and Principle points distance equations.

Homework Equations

Equations can be found here

http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/ThickLensFormula.html

The Attempt at a Solution

I have no clue about how to approach this problem. If there's any starter hint that you can give me, that would be great, then I can maybe derive it myself. Just I don't know how to start.
We can use matrix method or general equations for thick lens etc.

Thanks

Please make an attempt. It is difficult to help you otherwise. You could start by writing down whatever you know about thick lenses, principal points and nodal points (in equation form, if possible).
