Periodicity & Chemical Bonding Homework Help General Chem

AI Thread Summary
Ionization energy increases across a periodic table row and decreases down a group due to changes in atomic structure and electron shielding. The order of atomic and ionic radii for Cl, S2-, K, K+, and O reflects the influence of electron gain and loss on size, with S2- being larger than Cl due to added electrons and smaller than K due to its positive charge. First ionization energies correlate with metallic and non-metallic properties, where non-metals generally have higher ionization energies. Chemical bonding involves repulsive forces, such as electron-electron and nucleus-nucleus interactions, and attractive forces like nucleus-electron attraction and electron sharing. The octet structure indicates stability, with evidence from noble gases, and coordinate covalent bonds involve one atom supplying both electrons for bonding.

Periodicity & Chemical Bonding "Homework Help" General Chem

30. How does ionization energy change as one proceeds
a) across the periodic table in a horizontal row
b) down the periodic table in a vertical group
Give an explantion for each answer.

31. Arrange the following atoms or ions in order of increasing radius: Cl,S2-,K,K+,O
Give an explanation for the position S2- in relation to the atom or ion that comes just before and just after it.

32. What is the relationship between first ionization energies and metallic and non-metallic properties?

33. Identify two repulsive forces and two attrative forces that influences the formation of chemical bonds between two atoms.

34. Which of these bonds is most polart and which is least: S--O, Cl--Cl, or Cl--O? Justify your arrangement.

35.
a) What is meant by octet structure?
b) What evidence indicates that octet structures might be more stable than others?

36. What is meant by co-ordinate covalent bond?

37. Explain why you would expect a BeF2 molecule to be linear but an SF2 molecule to be an angular.

38.
a) How would you designate the hybrid orbitals formed by "mixing" one d one s and two p orbitals?
b) How many of the hybrid prbitals would be formed by the mixing?

39. Explain why C20H40 os a solid at 25degreesC, while C4H8 is a gas at 25degreesC.

30) you should be able to find trends of the periodic table in your chem book.

31) The elements get larger as their number gets higher that should help. Also, if you have a positive then you must loose an electron since more protons would indicate a different element

34) To find this you need to look at the electronegativity, which increases as you go up and across the periodic table. The molecules which have the biggest difference in electronegativity will be the most polar.

35) The octet is what most elements desire of their outer most shell. The last column in the peroidic table has a full octet
b) the previous statement should answer that question, since those are the noble gases and the most stable

36) There are two types of covalent bonds. One in which one molecule brings both electrons and one where each molecule brings an electron to share. It will be easy to find the difference

37) Do the Lewis dot structure and see what happens

38) Set up energy levels

39) This will have to do with the polarity and the ability to form a crystal structure, but you will have to give more info than this.

btw, in the future it might help for you to try these problems and then we can help you or check your answers. It will do you no good if we do your homework for you.

Good Luck

btw just was making sure that everything was the way i have stated things, sometimes I like to proof check my work; that is done... I'm doing a Chemistry Upgrade been a few years lol :bugeye:

Thanks for you help and support bud...

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
