AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a person's desire to pursue a 2-year math program at a community college but facing challenges due to lacking the necessary prerequisites, which include high school math course 3, chemistry, and biology. They have been accepted into a liberal arts program with a mathematics emphasis but are considering alternative routes to fulfill the prerequisites and start the math major sooner. Suggestions include enrolling in night classes or summer sessions, exploring transfer credits from other colleges, and preparing for placement tests through self-study. The overall consensus emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps to meet the requirements efficiently.

I wanted to simply take a 2-year math program at the local community college, but I did have the required prerequisites of HS math course 3, chemistry, and biology.

I've since been accepted into their liberal arts program with a "mathematics emphasis", but I'm starting to have doubts. If I could simply acquire these needed prerequisites, and start the "real" math major next year, I couldn't care less about the 1-year delay.

How might I go about getting these prerequisites? Should I look into night classes or something?

Do you mean did not have the prerequisites... I would definitely look into night courses! Maybe there is a summer session that has not started yet? Perhaps they can take credits from another local college that offers night courses if the one you are attending does not have what you need when you need it.

Do whatever it takes. That's probably the best advice I can tell you.

Do they have placement tests that you can self-study for?

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
