Question, whats the best chemistry software for a college student?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying suitable chemistry software for college students, focusing on various functionalities such as drawing chemical compounds, analyzing spectra, and performing calculations related to thermodynamics and quantum mechanics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant mentions having Mathematica and Polymath Edu for math and seeks an equivalent for chemistry.
  • Another participant suggests ChemDraw as the standard for drawing chemical compounds and notes that other software is needed for different applications.
  • A participant inquires about software capable of handling thermodynamic equations and other chemical calculations.
  • One participant questions the necessity of specialized software, suggesting that standard math programs like Mathematica could suffice for these calculations.
  • Another participant recommends Spartan for thermodynamic and quantum mechanical calculations.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the necessity and functionality of specialized chemistry software versus using general math programs. No consensus is reached on the best software solution.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the capabilities of existing software and the specific needs of students remain unaddressed, and the discussion does not resolve which software is definitively superior.

I currently have Mathematica, and Polymath Edu for my math stuff, but what's an equivalent software program for Chemistry?

What do you want the chemistry software to do? For drawing chemical compounds, ChemDraw is the standard. For other applications (analyzing NMR spectra, searching reaction databases, calculating properties of molecules, etc.), other software is needed.

Yeah^ The ladder. Like, is there software that can do thermodynamic equations, or other type of chemical equations?

Why can't you do these calculations in your standard math programs like mathematica?

Have you looked into Spartan? It's great for thermodynamic and quantum mechanical calculations.
