Include Sun's Diameter in Star Distance Measurement?

AI Thread Summary
When measuring star distances using the trigonometric method, the diameter of the Sun is not included in the baseline measurement. The baseline is determined solely by the size of Earth's orbit, which is approximately 2 astronomical units (AU). The Sun's position is considered as a reference point, but its diameter does not factor into the calculations. This clarification helps in understanding the application of parallax and Pythagorean theory in astronomy. Accurate distance measurements rely on the Earth's orbital dimensions rather than the Sun's size.

When measuring the distance of stars from the Earth using the Trigonomic method, using the parralax and Pythagorem theory, do you include the diameter of the sun with the 2 Au when measuring the baseline of the triangle?

I'm assuming yes, but not sure.

No. You're just using the size of the Earth's orbit. The Sun just happens to be (near) the center. (Ellipse, you know)

thnx i can see it now

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
