One of the entries on that page was the amazing Mont-Saint-Michel.
It is a lovely place, both on the inside and outside.

Over the past weekend I visited a model-train show in a nearby city, and saw something unusual for this region: a layout that includes a subway / metro:

A part of a very large ivy:

(I've posted a photo of this ivy before in the thread, but this time it was (sort of) partly in sunlight.
Well, actually, not in direct sunlight. The ivy is on a wall facing straight north, and I don't think I've ever seen it in direct sunlight. So all the light comes from reflections from the nearby houses and windows.)

Here's a very cool piece I bought in a secondhand shop.
I don't know what these things are called, but it is a frame with seven different types of sand separated by glass panes inside the frame. And when you move the frame around you get different configurations of the sand types in the compartments.

On the back of the frame there is this info which shows the origin of the different sand types:

And "U.A.E." must obviously mean "United Arab Emirates".

I remember having something similar a long time ago, but with only two types of sand IIRC. And definitely not from the UAE.

Wife and I went for a drive in the backwoods a few days ago since this was supposed to be prime leaf time in Central NY. Petty much a total bust --- a couple of hillsides with some color but nothing impressive. I had my camera but nothing was worth taking pics of.

BUT ... when we got back, I just stepped out to the end of our driveway to took this shot up our street.

At the South Carolina State Fair last Sunday: a flying fire engine!



This was my first visit to this fair, after living here for 38 years, and only my second state fair ever. The other one was the Michigan State Fair which a group of us physics graduate students visited about 45 years ago.

It took me about an hour to drive to Columbia, then another hour in a slowly-crawling queue of cars entering the fairgrounds parking lot. I should have gone in the middle of the week instead of the last day of the fair. The gorgeous weather (not too cool, not too warm) surely encouraged people to turn out.
