SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on rearranging the equation X=Y-0.0065*Z*Y^.6 to express Y in terms of X. The equation originates from empirical studies related to the lift coefficient of a deadrise planing surface of a boat, conducted in the 1960s. Participants express skepticism about the feasibility of rearranging the equation, highlighting the complexity involved. The user has utilized Excel for plotting and trendline fitting to approximate solutions, indicating a practical approach to handling the equation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of algebraic manipulation and rearrangement of equations
  • Familiarity with empirical equations in fluid dynamics
  • Proficiency in using Excel for data plotting and trendline analysis
  • Basic knowledge of lift coefficients in marine engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research methods for solving nonlinear equations analytically
  • Explore numerical methods for equation solving, such as Newton-Raphson
  • Learn about the application of trendlines in Excel for data fitting
  • Investigate the principles of lift coefficients in hydrodynamics
USEFUL FOR

Students and professionals in engineering, particularly those focused on marine engineering and fluid dynamics, as well as anyone involved in mathematical modeling and data analysis using Excel.

I don't think you can …

wherever does an equation like that come from?

Thanks for the welcome. The equation comes from emperical equations from a tow tank in the 1960's to define the lift coefficient of a deadrise planing surface of a boat at speed. Thanks for the help. I have plotted the equation in excel then added a trendline to get a good fit and backed out equations, very cumbersome.
