AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the requirement for submitting reference letters for a doctorate application at ETH Zurich, specifically the meaning of "reference data" related to the recommenders. It is clarified that "reference data" refers to the complete contact information of the authors of the recommendation letters, including postal address, email, and telephone number. The original German text emphasizes the need for letters that evaluate the applicant's scientific qualifications and should be signed with the authors' full contact details. There is some confusion regarding the translation of terms, but it is ultimately agreed that "reference data" pertains to contact information rather than a list of publications or a CV. The conversation also touches on the dynamics of providing help and the reception of feedback within the forum.

Is "reference data" the original English or a translation? I have never heard of such a thing.

yes, it is original english..

It appears that "... reference data (of my recomendator)... " might be a bio or cv of the person who wrote the letter of recommendation.

Then can you show us what they want in context?

2 reference letters
which should evaluate your scientific qualifications for a
doctorate at ETH Zurich. Preferably hand in letters with original signatures and complete reference data of the authors.

here is in german:
2 Empfehlungsschreiben
in denen Ihre wissenschaftliche Qualifikation I am Hinblick
auf das Doktorat bewertet wird. Bevorzugt sollten original
unterzeichnete Briefe mit vollständigen Kontaktdaten der
Autoren abgegeben werden.

which I just translate by google get this:

2 letters of recommendation
where your academic qualifications with a view
will be assessed on a doctorate. Preference should original
signed letters with full contact information
Authors are submitted.

I Think that is solution: reference data = contact information

Yes, it looks to me like "contact information" is the correct translation here. E.g. postal address, e-mail address, telephone number.

Translation:
2 letters of recommendation in which your scientific qualification concerning the PhD application is appraised (estimated, evaluated). Appreciated are originally signed letters with the authors' complete contact data.

So it is not original English then?

If you regard "academic qualifications with a view" or "Authors submitted" as good translations, then yes, it is.
I just wanted to help and clarify. Seems to be not welcomed though as long as one doesn't have 10,000 posts or a PhD.

Your critics doesn't seem to me as neither justified nor a scientific objective approach.

I was not criticizing you at all?? The post was meant for the OP who said it wasn't a translation. Nothing in my post was addressed to you??
