Reference wanted: surface and interface

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a Ph.D. student seeking literature on surface and interface science to enhance their research understanding. They express difficulty in finding a comprehensive review on the topic. Respondents emphasize the need for specificity in the inquiry, suggesting the student clarify their focus, such as the types of materials or properties of interest. A recommended perspective article from Science Magazine is shared, which discusses complexions and their novel properties. Participants encourage the student to explore references within the article and consult their advisor for further guidance.

I am a Ph.D. student just beginning my research. Recently, I found several papers about surface and interface interesting, so I want to know more about this area. However, I cannot find any specific review which can give me an overview of this area.

Can anyone give me a link to such literature?

Surfaces of materials is a discipline in its own right (surface science), so you need to be more specific. For example what materials are you interested in?

Can you narrow this down at all? For example, solid vs. fluid interfaces? Electronic vs. thermodynamic properties? etc...

I am interested in this perspective article:
http://www.sciencemag.org/content/349/6252/1059.full

Specifically, I want to know more examples of complexions(complexions is defined in the above article) and novel properties of them.

Did you try to look up the references in the article? Have you asked your advisor this very same question?

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
