AI Thread Summary
The European Parliament is implementing a standardized salary for its members, setting it at approximately €100,000 across all countries. This change will significantly impact salaries in various nations, with Italy's representatives seeing a reduction from €130,000, while Spain's will increase from €36,000, and Hungary's will rise dramatically from €9,000. The discussion raises questions about the feasibility of such a uniform salary structure, drawing parallels to the well-compensated officials of the former Soviet Union. Observers note that this move appears to be based on averaging salaries to create equity among members, with particular emphasis on the substantial increase for representatives from lower-paying countries.

I just watched the news: they are going to make the salary for europarementary people the same: ~€100,000..

This means for different countries:
Italy: from €130,000 to €100,000
Spain: from €36,000 to €100,000
Hungary: from €9,000 to €100,000

but.. HOW.. is that possible?!

Were not the commissars of the once Soviet Union equally well reimbursed?

Everyone who joins the europarlementary :) I don't know how many people are in there though..

But the salary thing should all equal out, it is my observation that they have taken the mean salary and standardized everything to that. The Dutch ones won't gain or loose, but can you imagine a salary raise from €9,000 to €100,000? whoo!

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
