AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the innovative concept of the Internet Chair, which features a magnetic stripe card reader that allows users to download a seating license, retracting spikes that guard the seat. This technology was showcased at the San Francisco Art Institute as part of the SeatSale exhibition, organized by Independent Curators International and curated by Steve Dietz. The chair promotes a unique experience for weary travelers, encouraging them to use government-issued photo ID cards to obtain a free seating license. However, users must agree to terms that prohibit capturing any memories of the experience, emphasizing a philosophy that "remembering is copying and copying is theft." The exhibition has also been featured in various other museums and galleries, highlighting its conceptual art significance.

Download a Seating License to retract the seat's content-guard spikes
Steve Mann, 2001 Feb. 7th

Here is the Internet Chair with magnetic stripe card reader and spikes that retract when a seating license is downloaded from a license server in response to input from the card reader incoroprated into the chair. The license server is in the 19 inch relay rack behind the Internet Chair.

The text on the scrolling LED sign mounted to the back of the chair reads:
WEARY TRAVELLERS NO LONGER NEED TO STAND FOR HOURS ON END... USE YOUR GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID CARD TO DOWNLOAD A FREE SEATING LICENSE.

The opening was Wednesday Feb. 7th, at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI, 800 Chestnut St.), organized by Independent Curators International (ICI) of New York, and curated by Steve Dietz of walkerart.org (Walker Art Center) of Minneapolis. SeatSale was also exhibited at various other museums and galleries, such as Austin Museum of Art, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, etc..

Fall colors are here, no mosquitos, no deer flies, and mild temperature, so my morning run was unusually nice. Only two meetings today, and both went well. The deer that was road killed just down the road two weeks ago is now fully decomposed, so no more smell. Somebody has a spike buck skull for their...
