AI Thread Summary
Engaging with physics before formal classes can be beneficial, especially if there is a genuine interest in the subject. Many participants suggest that self-study, such as watching educational videos from resources like Khan Academy, can provide a valuable head start. While some recommend focusing solely on math initially, others emphasize that there is no harm in exploring physics concepts early on. If video resources are not currently accessible, seeking alternative methods of learning or waiting until classes begin may be necessary. Overall, the consensus leans towards proactive learning in physics if the interest is strong.

Besides what I get from tv. I mean hold off on actually trying to learn it until I get to the actual classes and just focus on math for right now? Or did most of you try to study it on your own before you started taking physics classes?

there's no reason to wait until you need to take the classes. Watch some videos from www.khanacademy.org if you want to get a bit of a headstart. If physics really interests you, then go for it.

Thanks!

I'm having a problem watching videos right now, but that site looks so helpful.

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
