I suppose this will get moved to the philosophy forum. Here is the local forecast:

TODAY
Periods of heavy snow this morning, followed by periods of heavy snow in the afternoon, then periods of heavy snow this evening, intermingled with periods of even heavier snow. Blowing snow. Drifting snow. Snow may be heavy at times this morning and the foreseeable future. Visibility poor or worse at times due to snow. Total snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches on top of other snow, with yet more snow on top of that. Chance of snow near 100 percent. Chance of no snow 0%. Even the Eskimos don't have a word for this. Think blizzard plus flurries. And we don't get mentioned in the news stories because it's even worse at the White House.

Maybe this should be moved to the Philosophy forum.

No snow wons on

Sounds like a fun forecast.

When that storm passed us in Utah we got maybe 10 minutes of snow. Such a tease. It's all gone now and rained a bit this morning. :(

You have no idea how much pleasure it gives us up here that you guys are getting walloped and it is completely missing us.

Same here! Maine has been in the bullseye too many times this year, and finally a nice cold high-pressure zone has settled over us, forcing storms to take a more southerly track.

You know how many things I would kill to get 30 inches of pow in northern Minnesota? Heck I want to go to sierra at tahoe just to get some (last dumping was 5 feet!)

hmmm...

how many snowflakes fall in a year? and can someone guarantee they are all different?

exp (too many! + 1)!
and that's not counting the shovels-full that I have displaced relative to the distant stars.

I can guarantee you that they are all exactly alike, or they will be in the spring.

So far the storm that swept through the Virginias, Maryland, SE PA, southern NJ and Delaware has missed us. It's seems to be moving along the coast just south of Long Island and headed for Cape Cod.

I counted all the snowflakes on my front lawn two years ago. I forget the exact number, but it was a LOT.

I thought there was a repeating pattern of 1 million snow flakes or something of the sort.

I think down here we actually got about the same amount of water but it was all in the form of rain yesterday, enough to put a lot of standing water on roads and on saturated lawns.

You need to post a current picture. The older picture looks like my front yard back around 1993, when we have 24 inches on top of 18+ inches in a two week period. I think there was another ~6-10 inches a week later.

Currently, the depth is not bad at all. We had quite a bit of snow earlier in the season, then a couple of weeks back, we got about 3" of rain in one day, and it really knocked the snow down. The snowmobile trail is unusable with lots of exposed rocks and bare spots.

I was sort of sad that we missed the big snow here. We haven't had one this year.

It has been foreseen. The end of the world draws near :P

Here in central PA we got about 10 inches last night, which I was quite happy about - last time we got hit with one of these "blizzards" there were barely 2 inches on the ground. I like my snowy winters

At 4:00 pm Accuweather was predicting 100% chance of snow at 10:00 pm. At 6:30 they were predicting 85% chance of snow at 10:00 pm. Apparently he does play dice after all, and he cheats.

I am a snow agnostic. I don't believe in it, and when it shows up, I deal with the after-effects, but I don't actively deny it, either. That just makes it stronger.

(Although it probably doesn't exist.)

I think that I've heard this before in a different context.

[STRIKE]Spoon[/STRIKE] Shovel boy: Do not try and [STRIKE]bend[/STRIKE] shovel the [STRIKE]spoon[/STRIKE] snow. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
[STRIKE]Spoon[/STRIKE] Shovel boy: There is no [STRIKE]spoon[/STRIKE] snow.
Neo: There is no [STRIKE]spoon[/STRIKE] snow?
[STRIKE]Spoon[/STRIKE] Shovel boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the [STRIKE]spoon[/STRIKE] snow that [STRIKE]bends[/STRIKE] shovels, it is only yourself.

Can you come here the next time it appears to have snowed, oh snow guru?

(Not that snow is real, mind you.)

Which color pill will you choose? Will you choose to deal with the snow over and over, or will you choose to discover the truth? Choose.

Tank: So what do you need? Besides a miracle.
Neo: Shovels. Lots of shovels.

Another blizzard right now. That's two in less than a week!

The snow is falling and is supposed to fall all day. Total accumulation is supposed to be 6-12 inches (15-30 cm).

Lucky.

Calling for 10-20 inches here, but I already have over a foot of new snow in my yard. Supposed to snow for another 11 hours. This is on top of the 30 inches I had in my yard from Friday/Saturday.

We don't get that much here, perhaps because it may not exist, so I had to enlarge it a little.

Accidere ergo est. We didn't get as much as was predicted. I've finished shovelling out and am going to work now.

why when I looked at your photo, was I looking for a drawbridge?

(that's a metal roof, right? and not solar panels?)

  • #35
Just a metal roof. Standing-seam galvalum over 1" of styrofoam board over the pre-existing roof and insulation. With the snow-loads we get, I have serious doubts that solar panels would capture much energy in the winter when we most need it.

We got a healthy 8 inches of snow over night. Its very pretty.

This sucks.

Why are we here in Utah getting rain (!) and you guys are getting all of this snow.

We should donate all our snowy weather to Calgary!

Disney on Ice was canceled due to icy conditions. And the global warming conference was postponed. The forecast is for steadily falling snow until 2 o'clock in the morning, followed by sunny skies, so I expect it will all be melted away before I wake up.

For all you that wish you had snow right now, give me your address, I'll gladly FEDEX you a box of this crap. Take all you want. 12" snow + 2" of wet snow/ice = worst shoveling job I've ever had to do. The snow constantly sticks to you shovel making it take twice the effort to shovel away what you just picked up. It wouldn't be so bad if were the nice light, fluffy, powdery stuff that is easy to deal with. There may also be another snow storm next week too!

Dallas is getting hammered with snow. They're predicting 8" accumulation in some areas. This is the most snow I've seen in my lifetime.

That's a shame - I hear Florida was bidding for the next winter olympics

Good luck with the downhill events. They'd probably have to be moved to Mount Sunflower, KS.

I kept thinking of that picture when I was shoveling snow for the 4th or 5th time this week. The piles of snow next to my driveway are now nearly as tall as I am, and that's after about a half day of rain on Tuesday to melt things down a bit after Friday and Saturday's storms before the snow started up again yesterday. And I still haven't shoveled today's snow yet. It isn't going anywhere, so I can do it tomorrow morning; if it does decide to go somewhere in the meantime, even better. I looked at the road in front of my house this morning, it looked coated in ice still since yesterday, and decided it was another good day to work from home.

Tomorrow I'm going to head to work even if I have to hitch up Ember to a sled to get there. I'm going stir crazy being stuck home so long!
