Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around solving trigonometric equations, specifically focusing on the equation sin(x) / (A - cos(x)) = B and a related equation sin θ / (-2cos 20 - cos θ) = tan 20. Participants explore whether it is possible to determine the value of the angle x or θ given known values for A and B.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents the equation sin(x) / (A - cos(x)) = B and questions if x can be determined with known values for A and B.
  • Another participant asks for the context of the problem, suggesting it may be a schoolwork question.
  • A different participant shares a similar equation related to a physics problem and seeks to find the angle θ.
  • Concerns are raised about whether the questions are appropriate for the forum, with a suggestion that they may need to be posted in the Homework Help section.
  • One participant admits to lacking formal training in physics or math, indicating that their inquiry is not for schoolwork but rather a personal challenge with trigonometry.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on whether the questions are suitable for the forum's Homework Help section. Some participants emphasize the need for context and proper formatting, while others focus on the mathematical challenge itself.

Contextual Notes

There is an indication that the participants may not have fully defined the parameters of their equations or the specific values for A and B, which could impact the ability to solve for x or θ.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to individuals dealing with trigonometric equations in physics or mathematics, particularly those seeking assistance with problem-solving in a forum setting.

While solving a problem I arrived at this equation:
sin(x) / ( A - cos(x) ) = B

A and B are known values. Is it possible to get x?

Is this a schoolwork question? What is the context of the problem you are wanting to solve?

I'm trying to solve a physics problem which asks the value of an angle. The equation is this:

sin θ / ( -2cos 20 - cos θ) = tan 20

You did not answer my question directly. You know the PF rules. Is this question for schoolwork? If not, why are you a working physicist who cannot figure this out?

Oh, no, I don't have any formal training in physics (or math). :)) I'm just trying to resolve a physics problem and I always get stuck in trigonometry equations. So it's not schoolwork I guess.

But it is still schoolwork-like, so the PF rules require that you post this in the Homework Help forums, and fill out the HH Template. That includes you writing out what you think the Relevant Equations are, and showing your Attempt at the Solution. That is how the PF works.
