AI Thread Summary
Four years ago, Kelly was twice as old as her brother, and the product of their current ages is 160. The initial attempt at solving the problem used the wrong equation, leading to an incorrect answer. To solve it correctly, two variables should be defined: K for Kelly's age and B for her brother's age. The equations to set up are K - 4 = 2(B - 4) and K * B = 160. Focusing on these equations will help find their current ages accurately.

Try with two variables, say K for Kelly and B for Brother.

Try to write equation for

product of their ages today is 160.

thx a lot my brother ,,,, i didn't focus on product ,,,

I picked up this problem from the Schaum's series book titled "College Mathematics" by Ayres/Schmidt. It is a solved problem in the book. But what surprised me was that the solution to this problem was given in one line without any explanation. I could, therefore, not understand how the given one-line solution was reached. The one-line solution in the book says: The equation is ##x \cos{\omega} +y \sin{\omega} - 5 = 0##, ##\omega## being the parameter. From my side, the only thing I could...
