AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the recent independence referendum in South Sudan, where an overwhelming 99.57% of voters chose to secede from the north. This decision highlights the deep cultural and religious divides between the two regions. Skepticism arises regarding such a high consensus among voters, raising questions about the implications for northern Sudan, which relies heavily on oil exports. The south, possessing more than 80% of the oil production, currently receives only 50% of the revenue, leading to increased tensions. Additionally, the oil-rich border region of Abyei is set to hold a separate vote to determine its alignment with either the north or south, further complicating the situation.

From Astro's link:

Some 99% of South Sudanese voted to secede from the north, according to the first complete results of the region's independence referendum.

A total of 99.57 percent of those polled voted for independence, according to the referendum commission.

I'm aware of the cultural/religious differences between north and south Sudan, but when I see 99+ % of any large group of people agreeing on anything, I get a bit  skeptical. I hope for the best, though.

I wonder if Northern Sudan will be happy:

Sudan exports billions of dollars of oil per year. Southern states produce more than 80% of it, but receive only 50% of the revenue, exacerbating tensions with the north. The oil-rich border region of Abyei is to hold a separate vote on whether to join the north or the south.

Looking at the map, south has more oil fields.

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
