Successful Online Tutoring for Physics & Math: Tips from Experienced Tutors

AI Thread Summary
Many individuals are exploring online tutoring as a way to engage with physics and math while managing their graduate studies. They seek effective platforms that integrate chat, video, and digital whiteboards for tutoring sessions. Popular platforms mentioned include WyzAnt, tutor.com, tutorvista, and WizIQ, though there are concerns about competition with more experienced tutors, particularly those from prestigious institutions like MIT. New tutors often find it challenging to attract clients, as many prefer in-person sessions and face stiff competition from established tutors. Success strategies include advertising on platforms like Craigslist and being proactive in applying to various tutoring companies, despite concerns about sharing personal information online. Overall, the discussion highlights the need for new tutors to navigate a competitive landscape while seeking effective ways to establish their presence and attract clients.

There are times when I don't quite have the energy for my difficult graduate work, but I still feel like doing something physics or math related. I was wondering anyone here has had success doing tutoring online using one of the many available platforms that combine chat, video, and digital whiteboards. Which platforms did you use and how did you get established? How hard was it to obtain clients? Is it hard to compete with MIT graduates who have multiple years of tutoring experience on their profiles? I'm particularly interested in doing lessons for people who require assistance with short notice.

Plenty of online tutoring companies and systems if you check in craigslist and through YouTube. You need to be able to apply to some of them and not feel too uncomfortable about putting your personal information on online applications without seeing where physically and who-to will receive that application information. Too many of those systems and companies to try to list.

Sure, I started trying some of them out last week. I tried WyzAnt but I am noticing most of the clients prefer to meet in person. In addition, every client seems to be receiving applications from other tutors soon after they list on the site, suggesting the supply/demand ratio is not in favor of new tutors obtaining clients. So I'm wondering if anyone had suggestions on which sites gave them the most success and strategies that could be used.

MisterX,
I was going to mention WyzAnt also which you already know about; and then tutor.com, tutorvista, and WizIQ,( this last one, which I remember, you as a tutor may need to pay for to have an account, so anything like that is probably not to your liking). You can also advertise through craigslist and describe what and how you plan to do for any student.

I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
So lately, my interest in the realm of optics/optoelectronics/photonics engineering has grown and I have started to seriously consider pursuing a career in the field. I have done a bit of career research and also have done some learning on the side to gather more knowledge on these topics. However, I have some questions on what a career in these fields would look like, and I wanted to find out more about this area to know what I would be getting myself into if I did make the choice to pursue...
