AI Thread Summary
Estimates suggest that the total computing power of all operational computers on Earth could be in the range of exaflops, potentially exceeding 1 exaflop (10^18 floating-point operations per second). This immense processing capability raises questions about simulating complex biological brains, such as those with 100 billion to 500 billion neurons. Current models indicate that simulating a human brain's neural complexity may be feasible with existing global computing resources, aligning with the concept of a "Fermi problem," which involves making rough estimates based on limited data. The discussion highlights the intersection of computational capacity and neuroscience, suggesting that advancements in technology could enable the simulation of large-scale brain functions in the future.

Does anyone know of a good estimate of the computing power of all the computers that are on Earth and running.

Do you know how large of a biological brain it would be possible to simulate with all this computing power (eg. 100 billion neurons, 500 billion neurons, ect.)? It seems like it would be possible to simulate like a super huge brain with as much computing power as there is on the planet.

sounds like a "fermi problem"...

Thread 'Urgent: Physically repair - or bypass - power button on Asus laptop'
Asus Vivobook S14 flip. The power button is wrecked. Unable to turn it on AT ALL. We can get into how and why it got wrecked later, but suffice to say a kitchen knife was involved: These buttons do want to NOT come off, not like other lappies, where they can snap in and out. And they sure don't go back on. So, in the absence of a longer-term solution that might involve a replacement, is there any way I can activate the power button, like with a paperclip or wire or something? It looks...
This week, I saw a documentary done by the French called Les sacrifiés de l'IA, which was presented by a Canadian show Enquête. If you understand French I recommend it. Very eye-opening. I found a similar documentary in English called The Human Cost of AI: Data workers in the Global South. There is also an interview with Milagros Miceli (appearing in both documentaries) on Youtube: I also found a powerpoint presentation by the economist Uma Rani (appearing in the French documentary), AI...
