Theoretical Physics: UG Major & Importance of Sub-fields

AI Thread Summary
The discussion emphasizes the significance of three key areas in theoretical physics: elementary particle physics, plasma physics, and condensed matter physics. Elementary particle physics is crucial for understanding the fundamental building blocks of matter and the forces governing their interactions, which is essential for advancing knowledge in cosmology and particle accelerators. Plasma physics is important for its applications in fusion energy, space physics, and astrophysics, as it deals with the behavior of ionized gases under various conditions. Condensed matter physics focuses on the properties of solid and liquid matter, playing a vital role in the development of new materials and technologies, including semiconductors and superconductors. Collectively, these fields contribute to foundational research and practical applications that drive innovation in science and technology.

I'm an UG and I'm looking to major in theoretical physics, I learned that Elementary particle physics, plasma physics and condensed matter physics are of major importance. If so, of what importance are they?

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
