Time Dilation and aging Problem

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a physics homework problem involving time dilation and aging during a flight across the United States. The user is trying to calculate the time difference experienced due to relativistic effects while flying at 250 m/s. They reference the time dilation equation and express confusion over their calculations, which yield a different result than the solution manual. Additionally, there is a request for help in locating the solution manual for mastering physics. The user seeks clarification on their approach and calculations to understand the correct answer of 1.39×10−8 seconds.

Homework Statement

You fly 5000 km across the United States on an airliner at 250 m/s. You return two days later traveling at the same speed. How much less have you aged more then your friends at home.

Homework Equations

I think the time dilation equation is used:
delta_t= delta_t'/ sqrt(1-beta^2) where beta= v/c

The Attempt at a Solution

I have the solution from the solution manual but i'd like to know how they got to the answer, 1.39×10−8 s.

to find the delta t is the equation delta_t=delta_x/v used?

the beta is (250m/s)/(3.0*10^(8) m/s )

i keep getting 1.7 *10^-5 although the solution manual says this is incorrect.

Any advice is appreciated!

hi !

I've been so desperate to find the solution manual for mastering physics..!

Can you please tell me where you got it/?

or if it is possible, I would really really appreciate it if you could can it to my email, which is

Thank you very much

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
